Universal has secured the rights to create a film based on the 1979 arcade game, Asteroids. Yes, that is not a typo, we are talking about the little triangle ship that went around in space, shooting rocks and innocent flying saucers. Pew-pew-pew!
After winning the rights in a four(!) studio budding war, Universal has brought in writer Matthew Lopez and ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to begin work on the film adaptation. While creating a story from a game that has absolutely no story may seem like a daunting task, the studio is no stranger to creating something from nothing, as it is in the midst of forming movie scripts from several Hasbro properties, such as ‘Candyland,’ ‘Battleship,’ and ‘Ouija.’ Do not forget the ‘Monopoly’ movie being directed by Ridley Scott, of ‘Alien’ and ‘Gladiator’ fame either.
Perhaps, ladies and gentlemen, this will be the one movie that sticks to the game footage and does not disappoint us. Nah – that is just crazy talk.
