Daigo “The Beast” Umehara has consolidated his position the world’s top-ranked Street Fighter IV player by wining the 2009 EVO Championship world finals in Las Vegas. Daigo took home the EVO crown by defeating long-time adversary Justin Wong in a match that went down to the very last game.
In a match heralded as one of the most intense battles seen at an EVO tournament, Daigo’s Ryu managed to narrowly edge out Wong’s Balrog (Boxer). Wong usually uses Abel, but switched to Balrog in the final after being defeated by Daigo in a previous round. It’s the second time Daigo has defeated Wong in a high profile contest this year, after beating the US champion in the World Street Fighter IV finals in April. Daigo didn’t fare so well in the Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix portion of the tournament, however, getting knocked out in the first round. Also, my flow-chart Ken would totally beat his ass!

This was a nice series of championship matches with a lot more back and forth than I expected. I wonder if the outcome would’ve been different had Wong chosen Boxer from the start. And yeah, I’d be surprised if I could land a single hit on either guy with my humble Sakura. Get a PS3, Lee, so we can battle!
