This has been the month of awesome chiptune cover albums: first Daft Punk and now Weezer have been remixed and reimagined via vintage gaming systems. And by some of the best micromusicians to ever rock a Nintendo Game Boy sound chip.
Pterodactyl Squad’s Weezer tribute album, featuring contributions from some of the scene’s most notable artists, covers the entire range of Weezer’s musical legacy in classic 8-bit style – “Holiday” by Anamanaguchi, “El Scorcho” by Tugboat, “In The Garage” by OxygenStar, “Buddy Holly” by nordloef. Even the never officially released b-side “Jamie” gets the a-side treatment courtesy of Unicorn Dream Attack. It really is, as the website describes, like “the beloved games consoles of your youth all got together and formed a Weezer tribute band.” You can download individual songs or the whole album, free of charge from Pterodactyl Squad’s website.
