The end of the rabbit hole is in site for The Matrix Online, with Sony Online Entertainment set to pull the plug on July 31.
But even as the four-year-old MMO gets ready to shutter its virtual doors for good, the developers are offering incentive for old players to return, allowing anyone with an account in good standing to log in and play for free during the final days. And what final days they will be, with “the system becom[ing] more and more unstable with each passing day. Ashes raining from the sky, eyes being seen in the clouds, zombies, agents, angels, and demons all appearing out of the system’s corruption to wreak havoc across the Mega City,” according to Massively‘s Colin Brennan.
In addition to ramping up both the enemies and anomalies, the developers are planning an end of the world event. “It won’t be quite the same as having over 100 developers in the game as Agents like when we ended beta, but we have 4 years of tricks up our sleeve,” said former Online Community Lead Daniel Myers. “How could we pull the plug without crushing everyone’s RSI just one more time?”
