id Software eases the PS3 rage over Rage
BY Tommy Lawler Jul. 31st, 2009 More on:

Remember yesterday? Yeah, it was kind of a while ago. Well, in case you don’t and you also didn’t bother to click the link in the first freakin’ sentence, we mentioned that id Software’s John Carmack mentioned that the performance (as in frames per second) of their upcoming Rage on the PlayStation 3 is about half what it is on Xbox 360 and PC. Looks like things got a little out of hand and some PS3 supporters probably showed some dismay. But fret not. Carmack mentions in the exact same Edge article these words of encouragement and appeasement. “Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform.” He adds “The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we’re confident that we’re going to get that.”

They also made this tweet.

So there you go, folks. Rest easy, you Princes of PS3’s, and let’s all look forward to this game as one… whenever it comes out.

      FPS 60 Hz

FPS is the number of frames the console renders per second, the refresh rate of the television is measured in Hz (in this case, 60 refreshes/sec). You can still have a game running at 30 FPS, with the television refreshing at 60 Hz).

The statement means nothing - its a placebo.

The game could run at 60Hz, have no screen tears… but still be choppy.

True, but apparently Carmack uses the term Hz instead of FPS more often. And in this context he likely meant FPS anyway.

its because Vertical Sync is present in some console games locking the FPS to match 60Hz refresh rate to eliminate tearing. (this is what i think hes getting at)

this option turned on with PC games also locks the FPS to what ever Hz (refresh rate) your Screen is set at, to reduce tearing across frame rendering.

if RAGE does have Vertical Sync , this is what he mostly likely means, the fps matching 60Hz due to Vsync.

But its not at all clear , how its been put.

Some investigation says that Hz can refer to a number of cyclical rates, and as Rain said, John Carmack is wont to refer to frames per second simply as herz, and he means it in no relation whatsoever to the refresh rate of display devices of any kind. He’s talking about the frame rate of his graphics engine.
