Valve still not interested in developing for PS3 |

Valve head honcho Gabe Newell has never kept his distaste for the PlayStation 3 a secret. Just a few years ago, his lack of faith in Sony’s big ‘ol Blu-ray machine became about as subtle as a kick in the junk when he referred to the system as “…a total disaster on so many levels.”
Some time has passed since then, and despite the PS3’s less than stellar launch, the platform has picked up plenty of… steam (no Valve pun intended). The Orange Box notwithstanding, Newell’s disinterest in developing for the PS3 has not wavered, as is evident in his recent interview with GTTV’s Geoff Keighley. When asked if Valve has been trying to get better at developing for the PS3, Newell responded, “Uh, no. Not in any real way.”
Sony hasn’t exactly been accommodating to third parties wishing to develop for their platform in the past, so in a way, Newell’s stance is not entirely unjustified. Or maybe it was just that time that Kaz Hirai kicked sand in his eyes and called him ‘fatty’. Old hatreds die hard, you know.
Newell has a few more things to say, mostly about Left 4 Dead 2, in his appearance on tonight’s episode of GTTV.

why do they keep asking them about it if they know valve doesnt want to do it? then again, they also said they wanted to hire some ps3 people as well [wasn't that like a few months ago?]. so i don’t know. confusing! …or maybe its just me?

There were talks of a PS3 team joining Valve. Doesn’t seem so anymore though. I’m happy that Gabe issued an apology for the lack of PS3 support however.

Saying that Valve isn’t interested in developing for the PS3 is like saying your local Catholic church isn’t interested in holding a Bar Mitzvah for your son. i.e. No shit Sherlock.
Incidentally, both are run by fundamentalist tools who believe their own bullshit and devote their very existence to sycophantic worship of a higher power. The Pope? God; Gabe Newell? James Allard.

He’s just NOT good at learning the ps3. He said it was a waste of time? Its just too much power for him to handle. EA should just hire the team that ported the orange box to the ps3, cuz vavle never did it.

It is going to come down to Vavle listening to the gamers. Vavle will have to learn to flow with the times and work towards making games avaible to PS3 users. With the rise of industry and studios looking at Ps3 more and more the field is leveling out. Consumers are gearing towards owning a PS3 for blu-ray now that it has won out over HD DVDs. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

no one is really interested in the biggest failure of video game history, so why should Valve be?

^^ Come on Greenberg, if you’re going to post factually-wrong, detached-from-reality, major fanboi bullshit, use your real name for Christ’s sake.

PS “1st hour Gamer”, here are four multi-plat developers whose latest figures showed they each make more money from PlayStation3 than they do XBox 360: EA; Activison (seriously); Ubisoft; Konami.
Perhaps if Newell got off his fat ass he’d make more money for his company. But that would displease his best friends in Seattle, wouldn’t it? You know, his former employers. No bias there…..

Cortez is right, If you look at EA’s fiscal 2010 report you can see that PS3 had a slight drop to Xbox in ‘09 but made a steady recovery and surpassed the Xbox. PS3 offers better hardware to work with and a more stable system. Newell will be faced with a tough choice at some point and if he is smart he will start working with Sony.

Pfft, with the success of Steam, Half-Life and anything else they put energy into, Valve is in a cool position: they get to choose who they do business with. Sure, they may make a shitload of cash developing for the PS3 but if making huge stacks of cash isn’t their only goal in the world… why would they?
Last I checked Valve wasn’t a publicly traded company… and the other 4 listed by Cortez are (EA = ERTS, Activision/Blizzard = ATVI, Ubisoft Entertainment = UBI.* (lots of markets), Konami = KNM). Meaning Valve isn’t a corporate shell quite yet. How many stockholders would have been okay with development funds being used to integrate Sign Language into HL? Their shouts of “Too Risky! What’s my ROI?! I’ll fucking sue if you spend time on that shit!” could be heard from orbit.
