Sony patents new laughter recognition technology
BY Jeremy Hill Aug. 15th, 2009 More on:

Motion controls have been done time and time again but Microsoft and Sony are hoping to perfect the technology in ways so real it’s almost scary. Not to be outdone by the competition, Sony has patented a concept that tracks emotions as well.

The patent in question deals mainly with tracking laughter and facial expressions associated with that action. Using a camera (which doesn’t seem to be the PS Eye) and microphone, laughter and other gestures such as waving of the arms and even yawning can be detected, recognized and sent over a network via the PlayStation 3. The tech is apparently not limited to videogames either and can be made to work with television programs as well as films.

Guess we should prepare ourselves for the official most boring/funniest movie/game of the year awards.
