Updated / PS3 Slim announced, nobody surprised
BY Raphael Cua Aug. 18th, 2009 More on:

Update: Added official product shots and a video of Jack Tretton introducing the PS3 Slim below.

Original: Sony’s worst kept secret has finally been made official at Sony’s GamesCom press conference today. SCEI chairman Kaz Hirai took the stage at the conference to announce that the new PS3 model will be available in early September. Sporting a 120GB hard drive, a 33% size reduction, and a 36% weight drop, the PS3 Slim will also be carrying a smaller price of US$299/€200. The Slim will have the same features as the current PS3 models, which means no backwards compatability for PS2 games. Hirai also said that the current PS3 models will share the $299 price tag starting tomorrow. The release date for the PS3 Slim will vary by region, but should be available in all territories by the end of the first week of September.

Finally, good for Sony! It’s not the prettiest design though imo. They could’ve really made it attractive but it looks really cheap, and not in a good way.

Don’t like it. Looks like a cheap copy of the PS3 brand.

Still, if it makes it cheaper and sells more, it’s all good.

Ahh finally the PS3 Slim. After checking out my friends gigantic PS3 I decided to hold off and get the Slim. I figured they would release it eventually. Woot!

i’ll wait for the first round of reviews in regards to its capabilities as a blu-ray player, since that’s been the only reason i’ve waited this long. hopefully, there haven’t been any sacrifices made in that area.

i’ll admit this new design isn’t the most attractive (some might describe it as ‘childish’ or even a Chinese knock-off) but it’s $299 and that’s all that matters.

It’s not 200 euro’s but 299 in euro’s as well as I understand it. Making it as always more expensive in Europe then the US.

It looks like a cheap bootleg version. Nothing about the price or size is going to make me want to buy it.
