Video of the Week / September 06

Eric Wigdahl: “The Halo series has brought a mood of “OMG HALO!” to everything it touches and that’s mostly due to its popularity and how a lot of Halo players are trigger-happy and frenzied when it comes to ‘evolved combat’. But I think the guys at Bungie have always thought of Halo as a bit more serious. This ODST live action trailer manages to show off that serious side and get you involved in the story of a nameless soldier, despite being only a minute and a half long and all of the words are gibberish. This was a hard choice considering how much I loved the history lesson of Operation Flashpoint and the badass musical sauntering of Ezio from Assassin’s Creed II, but I’m giving it to ODST. Plus, I want one of those helmets.”

Vidal Stewart: “It takes so many steps in the right directions as well as a few steps in places you’d think it wouldn’t work. Choosing to keep the video in the perspective of Hungarian speaking ODST, it really emphasizes the general story at hand, that the fight against the Covenant is a fight for all humanity and not just us English speakers. Also, this really made a Halo movie seem possible, the potential is right there and someone needs to take the project.”

Jonathan Redaja: “If anything, the video itself is a self-explained story. It sums up everything about the game surprisingly well, and for Halo fans, you’ll get a little bit more out of it. Assassin’s Creed II had a good music video and gameplay footage, and Operation Flashpoint gave an interesting history lesson, but the ODST video showed something different and unique for the week. It’s one of the few videos that actually had its own independent story, yet still relating to the content. I’m more impressed they crammed that all within the time frame of a commercial.”

Sebastian Nordlund: “The first game in the Assassin’s Creed saga was a favorite. Sure, repetitive at times but the game was fresh, it looked good and different. It was something new at the time, so you would think that I’d vote for the Assassin’s Creed II trailer here, but I won’t. I’ve had my share of the Halo universe, almost to the point of exhaustion, and Halo 3: ODST wasn’t on my priority list until this live-action trailer came out and completely turned my feelings towards the game – or expansion if you will – around. It looks awesome, it’s extremely well done and it kicks ass… the perfect recipe for being the Video of the Week according to myself!”

Jordan Fehr: “I am probably a little biased because I saw this trailer for the first time in a theatre with 5000 people at the behest of the creative lead on the title, but the new Assassin’s Creed II trailer kicks incredible ass. Patrice Desilets put it best at PAX when he said (I may be paraphrasing a bit), “I am going to show the trailer we just released, because I like the music.” I think that the music starts to convey the mood of the game when it begins, and then quickly transitions into super modern, overproduced techno-pop which works perfectly for their purpose here. The trailer is a highly anticipated AAA title being slick and showing off. Of course it is marketing manipulation and there are no reveals of content here, but the release is quickly approaching, and its time to get pumped people!”
