Valve: “We’ve thrown out entire games” |

While talking to our PAX-goers about how Valve always seems to keep themselves ahead of the curve when it comes to breaking new ground with first-person shooters, Valve’s Chet Faliszek said that “developers and designers all make mistakes internally” and that Valve itself is no exception. But where they and most other developers differ is their approach.
“We’ve thrown out entire games,” Faliszek said. “You think something’s gonna work and… [developers] talk about this giant design document and it’s just like we’re so much more iterative. We have these ideas we want to express [and] the easiest way to test those is get them in the game as soon as you can and then have someone not on the team play it. All through the Left 4 Dead process, all through the Left 4 Dead 2 process we’ve had outside players come in and play the game and give us feedback.”
Faliszek went on to explain that “you can sit there and design how you want people to play it but then you see how people do play it, and that’s how people are going to play it. And you know it’s that process of working like that I think that helps us make our games come out as good as they do.”
“You have to sit there and always be adapting and always be changing as you’re designing the game.”

VALVE!! Please PLEASE please release CS:S for the 360. After looking at L4D2, it looks like it could be easily done. It would sell SOOOO much. there’s not many “sure things” in life, but this one IS. All that would have to be figured out is the mapping of the buy screen. PLEASE release Counterstrike source! i beg you
cmon GABE!

Oooh, I see, it’s like tellin my GF I have a huge sausage but I won’t show her.
Why don’t you get your hands on phyre engine instead of justifying yourselves like that?
Source Engine is overrated.

of course you wouldn’t. At what point did you think VALVE would start making games on the ps3? Orange box was a disaster of a port. Good luck with anything else.

i wish PC developers would go back to the good old days and develop only for the PC.
ever since valve and other companys like monolith and ID the PC coppies of their games have been lacking.
and now crytek have gone the same way im worried the same will happen to them.
crysis is what 2 years old? and its still to date the best looking PC game.
the ps3 and 360 have had games take that title like 7 times in 2 years compare to the PCs 0 in 2 years.
PS3 and 360 games are constantly coming out rising the bar, like uncharted was the best graphically than MGS4 came out than along comes KZ2 than uncharted 2.
360 had mass effect, than bioshock, than gears, than gears 2, eventually alan wake and splinter cell conviction.
but i dont see PC games doing the same, consoles are rising the bar, PC is leaving it where it is.
hopefully crysis 2 and RAGE and half life 2 episode 3 will change that, but there not going to be out for at least 1 more year.
there is constantly new video cards coming out, theres constantly new CPUs coming out what for?
ive got a 2 year old quad core PC with dual 9800GTXs and i can run crysis on max settings.
theres at least 5 video cards above those settings, and theres new ones coming soon.
what for?
if a 9800GTX is enough why buy a 295GTX?
all the extra power is being wasted, why buy a ferrari when your only going to go 60MPh?
its like buying a massive really expensive airplane for you and your wife?????
like whats the point.
this equipment is powerfull enough for what i need, so im going to spend more money into a product which has more power but is going to have no advantage what so ever.
if something has no advantage why spend the extra cash?
like im going to drive cross country im going to need 100 gallons of petrol but i will buy 1000 just for the sake of it???
talk about overkill.
how about we start to see some games come out and put the new NVidia MARS to the test.
thats to date the fastest video card available and i bet 50 bucks 40% of its power is being wasted on crysis.
i want most games to do what crysis did.
it came out and for months no one could play it at max settings.
thats what PC games should be like, not all because it would be to expensive.
but PC developers have gone greedy and soft, why cant they have extremely low settings so anyone can play the game, but once its bumped up to max you need a very powerful PC to play the games.
PC gaming use to be for the elite, for the people who spent thousands of dollars upgrading their PC, its fine to dumb it down for the casuals as long as the hardcore are not getting dumb down.
