NPD August results show the PS3 catching up

With its mid-month price cut, the PlayStation 3, which has been a distant third on NPD Group’s sales charts for many months, started to show some muscle in August as the freshly released numbers today show. With 210,000 units sold, the PS3 was right on the 360s (215 400 units sold) heels last month, while the Wii’s 277,400 units sold still secured it the top position.

The DS (552,900) comfortably outsold the PSP (140,300) once more. The PS2 sold 105,900 systems.

The most popular game (full list with sales numbers below) was the 360 version of Madden NFL 10, followed by Wii Sports Resort, the PS3 version of Madden, and the PS3 and 360 versions of Batman: Arkham Asylum.
