The swirl loved ’round the world |

Yesterday marked the ten-year anniversary of the release of the Dreamcast, Sega’s last and possibly best piece of gaming hardware, the very mention of which still warms our otherwise shriveled black hearts.
Despite having more features, better graphics and a cheaper price point than Sony’s little black box, the Dreamcast just couldn’t compete with the PlayStation 2. Not that I don’t love my PlayStation 2. But an illustrated homage to Madden NFL 2001, no matter how gorgeous, just isn’t ever going to tug at the old heart strings like this moving tribute by 2D Forever’s Tom Waterhouse, complete with character chart.
Use the comments to share your favorite moments and memories this beloved casualty of the console wars, or to imagine what could have been.

My 13th bday, my parents gave me a Dreamcast. Biggest surprise ever, totally out of character for them to spring for something to big for my birthday. And it led to some of the best gaming ever, like Power Stone, Mars Matrix, MvC2, Tony Hawk. Still one of my favorite systems for all time.

I bought the Dreamcast 2 weeks before they announced they were discontinuing it. ;;
I bought it for Shenmue and I kept playing it for long after once we (Dreamcast owners) realized how easy it was to burn games for it.
Also Seaman is still hooked up and ready to play in my bedroom.

I got a Dreamcast, for Christmas I think, mainly enjoying Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (arguably the best 3D sonic games ever made) and also Shenmue. That was a good game, and so in-depth for its time. You could play in the arcade! You could play a game within a game!
