Blizzard’s new MMO to have “broad appeal” |

We’re not exactly sure how much broader an MMO can get than World of Warcraft with its subscriber numbers approaching the 12 million mark, but apparently they can. At least according to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. The comment came out during the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference when Kotick was asked about Blizzard’s Battle.net plans, “What we’ve announced at Blizzard is that we have StarCraft coming, Diablo has been in production…and a new, unannounced MMOG that has a little more broad appeal.”
To state the obvious again, we’re not exactly sure how much broader you get than WoW. Nevertheless it definitely continues to raise questions about what kind of setting Blizzard has in mind for this new MMO as we know it’s not a WoW sequel and besides the fact that we know it’s a brand new IP. So what then? What on earth could they be working on that would be broader than WoW and not rooted in Warcraft, StarCraft or Diablo lore? Inquiring minds want to know and unfortunately we probably won’t know for a good while. However, we certainly wouldn’t mind hearing your speculation on the subject.

Let’s be honest, if Blizzard is making it, people will play it. AND still play WoW. Cocaine’s a helluva drug.
My bet is the game will be more on the creative side, along the lines of that experimental game, LOVE, and will walk away from the “loot, kill, level, loot, kill, level” pattern of every MMO in favor of a less militaristic approach. At least that’s a broader, more revolutionary step they could take.
