Wanna see some Avatar gameplay footage?
BY Lee Bradley Sep. 24th, 2009 More on:

“The interesting thing about Avatar is, it’s not really a movie, it’s not really a game. It’s an experience.” That’s what Brent George, animation director, said about Avatar in the first of the game’s developer diaries. Perhaps what he really should have said is, “The interesting thing about Avatar is, it’s a fairly standard third-person shooter.”

We’re looking at the above gameplay footage of Avatar: The Game and we’re thinking, is that it? With all of Cameron’s hyperbole, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we should expect wondrous, jaw-dropping stuff. Instead we see a little bit of Gears of War, a little bit of Lost Planet and a little bit of Halo 3. Nothing wrong with that, of course but… all these years working on Avatar and all you can come up with is, “If it moves, shoot it?” Really Cameron, Really?

Now of course, it’s early days and all that, and this is only a couple of minutes footage, so maybe we’re wrong. We hope we’re wrong. Convince us we are in the comments.

Looks fun, but nothing I haven’t seen before. If you’re gonna steal, steal big and steal well. I’m sure the whole “it’s an experience” hyperbole is referencing the way the game looks and feels in 3D, which is pretty awesome according to OXM. For those who can afford it, I’m sure this game will cause some faces to melt. For the rest of us… looks fun, but noth– Wait, now where have I heard that before?…
