So it’s pretty obvious that Netflix Instant Watch is a pretty cool thing. What made it super awesome, though, was when it showed up on Xbox Live for Gold members. Of course, being that there is a massive competition between consoles, it only makes sense that supporters of the Wii and PlayStation 3 would wonder if/when the service would find its way to their console of choice. And why wouldn’t it? The thing’s done Netflix a good chunk of good. Well, there is an answer to those who wonder, and it comes straight from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. The answer is “eventually.”
“Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that.”
Eventually sure sounds better than never, even if it probably means “It’ll be a while.” But then again… the company did make a job posting just this last April for an Engineering Leader who would direct “a small technology team to rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms.” And more recently in July, Sony announced the service coming to its line of Bravia HDTV’s while Netflix hired a Head of Game Platforms who had a hand in the development of the Wii MotionPlus dev tools.
Maybe eventually is sooner than we think?
