Rumour / Sony Motion Controller called “Sphere”
BY Lee Bradley Oct. 5th, 2009 More on:

According to a report over at Joystiq, the peripheral Sony have been tentatively referring to as the PlayStation Motion Controller may finally have a proper name, “Sphere.” Presumably highlighting the glowing ping-pong ball attached to the end of the device, the name Sphere was used for the controller by two third-party developers at last month’s Tokyo Game Show.

Speaking at the event, SEGA producer Yasuhito Baba used the name while fielding a question about the possibility of a motion-controlled Super Monkey Ball on PS3, saying “We don’t know what’s going to happen with both the Sphere… really. For now, we’re taking a wait-and-see approach.”

Furthermore, Joystiq referred to the Sphere in an interview with Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi, who immediately knew what they were talking about.

Sony representatives at the show claimed to be unfamiliar with the name, hence the “rumour” status, but they may be toeing the party line ahead of an official announcement.
