Industry will be better off if PS3 wins this generation, Tretton reckons
BY Michael Healy Oct. 6th, 2009 More on:

If you’re delicately sipping a beverage as you read this article, prepare to spit it out in shock and disbelief: Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton recently told Forbes that it would be best for the videogame industry if PS3 beats out Nintendo and Microsoft this generation.

Elaborates Tretton, “We like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry, because we have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences.” Clearly, Tretton is referring to Nintendo’s reputation as a medium for kid- and family-friendly games, while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 caters to the more “hardcore” of the gaming masses.

So, what say you? Is a PS3 win a win for everyone? Or is Tretton just saying this stuff because he, ya know, kind of works for Sony?

Whichever company fosters the most innovation for the industry going forward is the ‘best to win’. Right now, that’s Nintendo. They’ve broadened the audience for gaming and put gaming back into the mind of the general public.

The PS3 & 360 are nice and all, but at the end of the day, it’s just more of the same with more horsepower. So no, personally, I think it’s ‘better’ overall if Nintendo ‘wins’ this generation, which from the looks of things, it already has. The Wii has forced the competition to start looking at things differently. You think Natal and Orb would have been considered if the Wiimote hadn’t taken off?

This is ridiculous. I cannot believe what this man is saying. Not because he’s obviously upset due to lower than expected sales for the ps3, but because this is the best Sony could come up with. I love all of gaming. Last generation the ps2 was hands down the best gaming system. While I love my 360, I happen to think that, no, I happen to know that the Wii is by far the most innovative and original idea since NES fir launched. I say Nintendo should win, which it pretty much already has, this generation of console gaming, followed by the Microsoft for having such a huge number of titles under their belt, and finally Sony.

I’m sorry, but he sounds like a sore loser. Nintendo has taken a far more risky jump when they announced the Wii. Not only it was lacking in the horse power department, but adding motion controls into the games was something Microsoft or Sony wasn’t plan on doing until recently. Got to give Nintendo some props.
