How do you bring something new to the over-saturated fantasy genre? Why, with over-abundant layers of historical, political and architectural backstory, infusing your unique blend of dark fantasy and high adventure into the very brick and mortar of the game world. This is what BioWare has tried to do with Dragon Age: Origins, according to the latest developer diary, which details the team’s efforts to tell an epic story through equally epic environments and structures.
“We’re not telling a story with words alone in Dragon Age: Origins,” said designer Ferret Baudoin, “what’s in the levels actually tell you a visual story, and also an archeological story as you’re going through the game.”
“They’ll tell of the great, wondrous battles that have taken place, and you’re just now walking through the ashes.”
