Sega determined to “crack core gaming”
BY Rain Anderson Oct. 12th, 2009 More on:

They’ve said it before and they’re saying it again; Sega wants to find the Wii’s core gamer market.

In an interview with gi.biz, Sega UK’s managing director John Clark has reiterated the company’s plans to crack the core gaming code and said that Sega is “prepared to have a go and try to be innovative.”

Even though widespread success is yet to come, one clearly mature title, the Platinum Games-developed MadWorld, Clark says, sold well enough to put Sega in a place where they’re “prepared to invest in high quality, new IP.”

“… there must be a way to release mature, more adult content on the Wii format.”

I don’t think so, too many soccer moms. Take your great motion ideas and bring them to Natal and Wand instead.

No. Sorry, Sega, but you chose the wrong console to focus on this time around.

I would really like it for sega to become the underdog in the current/nex gen era. For too long since the dreamcast have they been put down, kicked about, raped, slahed and thrown onto a wet pavement having their skull cracked on the sidewalk and become infested with disease carrying rodents. A bit OTT yeah, but still. Theyre slowly but steadily coming back up. Heres to hoping that Sega will come back into the console industry, by first releasing a better portable gaming device than the ipod touch-yourself, pornstation portable and the nintendo DipShit combined. Then, they can rule the nex gen console wars, then eventually take over the world!!!!! HAIL SONIC!!!

I agree, it “can” happen but developers really need too focus on what gamers want. The Conduit was a good attempt, but was plagued by homebrew hackers and re-spawn glitches. The game however was the first shooter on wii too feature voice chat and bloom effects not seen in other Nintendo games.

Modern warfare Reflex(remade for the wii) will be coming out in November,so lets just see how well this game will sell.

The problem with Madworld was that it went too far. The game they made was mature in the sense that it got an M rating, but it wasn’t a game that most adults would want to play. It seemed like it was really appealing to the 17 year old kid who can finally buy M rated games. I can’t speak too poorly of it because I haven’t actually played the game, but in my mind a game like Okami is more mature than a game like Madworld. And Hotel Dusk is the most mature game I have ever played in my life.

I agree that MadWorld was just too much. I’d love core gaming experiences on the Wii, but that doesn’t mean I want tons of blood and gore. I want something challenging, with complex gameplay and/or storytelling. Shoot another F-Zero my way, or Luigi’s Mansion 2 (you’d have to up the difficulty on it though).
The Wii will lose the novelty of being the only motion controller based system soon, so I hope that Nintendo and the third-party Wii developers will be able to cater to me more successfully in the future. Shoot some new IP our way or bring back classics in a challenging way. 2D, hi-res Metroid. Just do it.
