30% of Guitar Heroes are in fact heroines
BY Michael Healy Oct. 28th, 2009 More on:

Apparently, the fairer sex loves to rock out. In a recent interview with Fortune magazine, Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig spoke of the future of the popular music game franchise and discussed particulars regarding the current Guitar Hero fan base, “A very large group really wants great guitar music, and they don’t want us to confuse that. And there’s another group of people who love that, but also love to have more current music, more family music, music more popular for girls — 30 percent of our players are already girls, and we want that to grow. One of the great things about having a franchise like this is you can really meet all kinds of consumer demand.”

Specific plans for meeting and growing female consumer demand are already apparent. Artists that will feature prominently in Activision’s forthcoming Band Hero include Taylor Swift, Lily Allen, Hillary Duff, Janet Jackson, and No Doubt. Whether the presence of such girl-friendly music will increase the franchise’s female user base remains to be seen.

As a member of the fairer sex, I can say that I love Rock Band. It’s so much fun to play, and a great way for my boyfriend and I to share the gaming experience! That said, I’m always so bummed that there are so few great songs with female lead vocals. Janet and No Doubt are a good start…but if Band Hero got their hands on the Madonna catalog? My boyfriend would have to wrestle the xbox away from me!
