PS3 “by far the best platform” for Heavy Rain
BY Lee Bradley Oct. 31st, 2009 More on:

He didn’t really want to get dragged into it, but Quantic Dream’s founder and co-CEO David Cage has revealed his belief that the PlayStation 3-exclusive Heavy Rain wouldn’t be possible on any other system.

Speaking during his Developer Session at today’s Eurogamer Expo in London, Cage was responding to a question from one of the attendees following a demonstration of the game. After a bit of a pause and an audible sigh, Cage said, “Whatever I answer, my answer will be suspicious… Honestly, I don’t think so. I think it had to be on PlayStation 3 for two main reasons: the hardware, the architecture of the PS3 is extremely powerful in the way it is structured. If you make a real PS3 engine, then you can have really fantastic performances. If you try to port from another platform, then it becomes difficult.”

Cage continued, “This is a console we all love at the studio. I play PSOne, PS2, it’s really a part of my culture. The controller is part of my home… and it’s a really, really powerful console. I’m not so much into graphics, to be honest with you, I don’t believe you need ultra realistic graphics to get emotion, you can get that with very low graphics. But we wanted to create emotion from believable characters, that was the idea. With this approach PS3 was by far the best platform.”

@MetalGearRising PS3 is the best console to date, maybe not the best selling, but the best none the less. And about Heavy Rain, your probably just a 360 fanboy and jealous that the 360 cant do anything that has been accomplished in Heavy Rain. and very few of the 360 game will even come close.

Oh, and “the 360 cant do anything that has been accomplished in Heavy Rain” - Yes it can! Why, only yesterday, I saw an Xbox 360 game that had a menu, shooting and all sorts of things that are just like the things that you expect Heavy Rain to do.

The smart money says that this is just another title being pimped to the PS3 fanboise - sorry, fanbase - in order to keep them interested, only for it to be average at best, just like Resistance, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, that appalling GT5 demo, Home…could go on….

Any way we don’t need this FLOP of a game near a xbox360 when we have games like Alan Wake and will sell in its millions not like heavy rain so keep your QTE.

      @MetalGearRising & Woody:

They’ve shown actual in game footage and it looks amazing. Though the game isn’t quite the experience some gamers are wanting or expecting, it’ll be an amazing one nonetheless, QTE or not.

Alan Wake looks uninspired and overhyped. When I first saw footage of it at E3 I thought it was basically Microsoft’s pitiful answer to Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain oozes with emotion and has brilliant graphics and gameplay to compliment it.

A lot of 360 fanboys are getting really nasty with how well PS3 hardware sales are rising and how great PS3 exclusives are looking. The only reason why I’m posting here is to voice my opinion and hopefully elaborate on what a true gamer is: someone who just enjoys games, regardless of console.

If you refuse to give games like Uncharted 2, inFAMOUS, Demon’s Souls, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 and so on a chance you’re an idiot IMO. Heavy Rain will be a great addition to the ever-growing lineup of amazing exclusives coming out of the first and second party studios that release stuff on Sony’s platforms.

When they say it’s the best platform to make the game on or it’s the only possible platform, they mean it. This is usually because of the data capacity of bluray or the powerful infrastructure of the PS3. I won’t dive into technical stuff because most ignorant 360 fanboys won’t care.

Well, if it can be done on xbox 360, why haven’t we seen any games that even come close to the graphical fidelity of MGS4, Uncharted 1/2, Heavy Rain? Are 360 developers just lazy/untalented?

*sigh* what a shame to read the comments here. Obviously Heavy Rain can be done on the Xbox as technically it’s not that exceptional. And obviously this is just coorperate talk. I do think however the entire feel of the PS3 might fit the title more. It’s just something that in terms of marketing and the entire atmosphere fits better on the PS3. Nothing technical. At least not what I have seen in trailers. Since the game isn’t out yet it’s hard for any of us to make solid claims.

As for Alen Wake, I don’t get what it has to do with heavy rain. I don’t see a need to bash it. As it looks to become a solid title. But I also don’t see it as some sort of xbox version of Heavy Rain. it’s just another Horror Survival and hopefully a bit of a good one. At least, that’s what I can make out from the trailers. And more can’t really be said if you’ve not played it if it’s truely good or bad.

I own all consoles (incl. previous generations) and all this nonsense from fanboys is annoying. Just play the game games and enjoy them. Ignore marketing talk like this. It’s nice for blogs (I write for a Dutch gaming blog, so I know it’s nice to sometimes have a constant stream of news like this), but really. It’s just meant to create more buzz and news for a title without really being constructive.

Oh and Schobeleth, nobody needs to have played all those titles or else they are an idiot. People have preferences in terms of games. You don’t need to like the same things other people like. I for example became bored with MGS halfway through part 3 on the PS2, inFAMOUS seemed okayish, Resistance is just a mediocre shooter and Demon’s Souls is a game that takes up to much time if you have a full time job and a full live to upkeep. I do have nothing agains’t these games. They are probably really good if your into them. But they are just games. People are free to enjoy them…. or not. You don’t become an idiot due to not choosing a particular form of entertainment. People have different tastes. Thank god! (like how the Japanese who are huge into the PS3 don’t like Uncharted at all. With very poor sales figures. I love the game as a Europian, but most of them seem to ignore it. And I think most of those Japanese people who play games on the PS3 and ignore Uncharted are prob. more die-hard PS3 fanboys then most :p)

Yes i agree with this last line, IF YOUR A REAL GAMER, who cares what games the console on. Only mcfags vomit out exclusive games vs other console exclusive games when both games are totally different, you cant compare them.
I still remember retards back then said PS3 was sht cause it “had NO games” (Made me think what made him think that). What a small brain. To fanboys, any unrealistic comparison somehow makes sense to them.

      As a NEUTRAL post.
PS3 Does have better technology and architecture and what ever else is in there, ITS JUST THE DEV’s of the w/e game are still “Confused” or does not know how to fully use PS3’s different architecture (Yet i still dont know why ppl post its still sht).

Sure both consoles are very powerful, most devs that made games for 360 really do know how to code their crap on it making their games extremely brilliant, this statement does not mean 360 is superior to ps3. Its all down to the Devs, YET I STILL DONT KNOW WHY MR METALGEARRISING THINKS OTHERWISE. And please stop trolling

Ye gods, can we quite with the fanboyism (and, I have to say, the 360 kids are being more obnoxious in this particular thread, although both sides have said all sorts of stupid things over the internet) and get with the gaming. If you can’t have fun gaming on PS3 or 360 then you’re not a gamer. If you can, what are you wasting your time typing here for (unless you don’t have one, of course ;)) - go off and play them :)

And as for Cage’s comment, I’m not a graphics programmer, and I haven’t seen the full game of Heavy Rain, so I can’t say whether it is or isn’t possible on the 360, PS2 or Sega Dreamcast. But I can say with a pretty good degree of confidence that no-one posting here knows either, so don’t go making yourselves look like idiots and only say stuff we can be sure of. Apologies if any of you really are part of Quantic Dream ;).

And Asgorath - good point on the ‘feel’ of the game and PS3 - whatever the tech specs, Heavy Rain deffo looks like a game that would do better commercially on the PS3.

IS the reasons that Heavy Rain can’t be done on the 360 cause 1. it was created with the PS3 in mind. 2. the size of the game can fit on the Blu-ray and 3. since david love the playstation.
I wish it success but beside it looking great it has to play great. So i’m sick of hearing it can only be done on the PS3. Just tell me it being created for the PS3.

@Asgorath, I respect your comment as you are truly an intelligent person and gamer. You’re right, I shouldn’t have said you’re an idiot if you don’t play those games.

I’ll admit it, I’m a fanboy of those games :P I think they’re so good I wish everyone enjoyed them, Uncharted 2 most of all. You’re definitely right about Japanese gamers not accepting Uncharted as much as us but it’s been selling surprisingly well.

Alan Wake seems like a survival horror/emotion driven game and for some reason it reminded me a lot of Heavy Rain. It just seems uninspired to me, I really didn’t like how the enemies/combat works but I’m sure other people will like it.

Heavy Rain could possibly be done on the 360 but they’d (assuming) have to put it on more discs and compress it because of the data limits of the DVD, a lot of PS3 exclusives have been known to be bigger in size and sometimes HDD installs. Also, arguably it’s easier to port from the PS3 to the 360 from what a lot of developers are claiming so it’d be easier to re-code/build it for the 360’s architecture. Still, will that happen? No, since Sony is publishing Heavy Rain.

First and second party games are going to be what really push consoles with some third party gems here and there. Third party exclusives are a thing of the past IMO, it’s rare to see a third party exclusive, especially for it to remain an exclusive too.

man…. I kinda have to chime in real quick here and say that speaking of hardware. IMO the ps3 probably edges out the 360. I don’t know of one dev who has ever come out and said the 360 has better hardware(well, not including ms employees), most that I have read about either say they are equal(to avoid confrontation) or they say the ps3 has a little more power.. The only known complaint with ps3 hardware is the memory issue. Having the split up memory instead of it all grouped together. This doesn’t necessarily make it worse, but does cause problems with porting a game from the 360 to the ps3. the ps3 has a completely different architecture from the 360, so a game specifically designed for the 360 and then ported to the ps3 will look shoddy unless the devs take the time to redo the game properly for the ps3. most don’t. The fact that most ports look as good as they do says alot about the strength of the ps3. a remarkable note about the ps3, is that a game like uncharted 2 was released only about a year and a half after uncharted 1. given the notable improvement in quality for the game, thats pretty dang amazing… I mean just to do a comparison, It took naughty dog less time to produce uncharted 2 than it took bungie to produce odst which is basically just an overpriced add-on of halo 3. Also, on the subject of Fanboys and exclusives. The concept of a multiplat does nothing to improve the quality of a game. It especially does nothing for me that i can see as a consumer. I am all for exclusives. a multiplat means either I have to wait longer to get a great game, or the game will be not so great because time will be cut short to make the port and still deliver at a reasonable time. On top of that, either way I have to worry about whether the console I use will get the Gimped(ported) version that isn’t up to par with the other platform(which is notable in most cases). The only benefit of a multiplat is the dev company makes more money potentially in the end if all plats sell well. (once again that does nothing for me). Its not being a fanboy to want good games for the console you own. It only makes sense that if you invest several hundred dollars into a console that you will want it to provide good games. What kind of idiot invests money in something for their own pleasure but then turns around and says, I don’t care whether all the games i want start showing up on a different console. I’m just happy that other people get to enjoy it. Pile of crap… If i owned an Xbox360 i’d be pretty fired up too, it was a terrible year for them. mostly of let downs. If you exclude the halo-hype there wasn’t really anything(at least nothing I had any interest in). So should they be voicing their opinions and is it wrong for them to do so on public forums. heck no… it is through voicing opinions that companies can better understand the demands of the consumer. Its just important that we voice things as our opinions and not try to pass them off as fact.. Its also important to be respectful of others. But shoot, I support sony because i bought a ps3, and I will push for it for the rest of this generation, so far I haven’t been let down, if they drop the ball in the future though, I will make a decision next gen based off that. Right now I’m content though. I get great games, good movies, instant sd and hd tv shows, a very wide variety of games from off the psn and disc based. I have no complaints with the psn. I think its great. Anyway, feel free to disagree with my ramblings. Its fine, thats what is great about the freedom of expressing your opinion.

The pc couldn’t do it better as far as texture because of the PS3’s unreal ability to provide the largest textures possible (it is the only good thing about ps3, look at uncharted 2’s textures and Character LOD textures). I still wish they wouldn’t be so lazy as to not port it to the pc at all, where is the love? I absolutely loved Quantic Dream’s previous game, Fahrenheit, and I would love to play Heavy Rain, just not interested in buying the crappy consoles (which are like crappy pc’s in their own respect, hell my pc is a year old and it plays games the 360 plays except they look 1000X better, longer clipping distance, better LOD, better pretty much everything, and I know because I own a 360) No one can say Quantic Dream’s game will be crap because we all know that isn’t true, especially if you have played Fahrenheit, no one has done more to advance games as an art than this developer. At the same time I’m super angry at them for becoming Playstation Fanboys and not releasing on PC like Fahrenheit. Their games are def original and wonderful, I guess I may have to pick it up for PS3….

FIRST, see if you can find a new PC system for 300 bucks or less. then tell me how well it plays ANY game…. much less how it compares to a console version of the game… People get the console version of a game because they don’t like having to figure out graphical/sound configurations, and deal with bugs, and then have slow ups in the game or freezes because they have the settings too high or too low. PC gaming is inefficient to say the least. for a new ps3 game to get the most out of it, i spend 59 bucks. for a new pc game to get the most out of it, i will have to spend, 40 bucks plus 300-500+ bucks for the new graphics processor that just came out so I can run this NEW game on high settings. otherwise i have to setting with lag, or sub ps2 graphics… gee yay! lets all run out and buy pc games! thats intelligent!

Did MetalGearRising said Final Fantasy XIII plays better on 360? DUDE! the game had to be downgraded so IT COULD BE PLAYED ON 360! Ps3 has nothing inferior to the 360, its just that developers like Valve do not like “Tricky Hardware” Whenever a developer says that a PS3 game cannot be done on 360, its true. when 360 developers say a game cannot be done on PS3, its true, but in their case is because they do not want to go through all the trouble of literally making a new game for the PS3, because if that was the case, it would be clear that AAA games would look better on PS3. PS3 has no inferior Hardware, its just that developers are too lazy to create a Masterpiece, e.g. Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3. If Final Fantasy Versus XIII manages to stay PS3 exclusive, you will then see the difference between a FF game on PS3. and a FF on 360.

I agree with some of the posts. The PS3 does have a great assortment of exclusives. This wasn’t the case when it was released but I do believe they have the better exclusives now. I’ve been gaming since the days of Atari 2600 and have both a 360 and PS3 and this is my honest opinion. Uncharted 2 is one of the greatest games I’ve played this decade. And for those doubting the PS3 I played the God of War 3 demo; trust me when this game is released all of these criticisms will be put to rest, the game will be epic.

You guys must be poor to be arguing over game consoles, lol. If you don’t have both an XboX360 and a PS3 then you’re doing yourself a disservice as a gamer. Both consoles offer great games. Sure Resistance sucked but that’s why you go with a Halo or CoD. InFamous was awesome, Prototype was mediocre. Killzone sucked IMO but SOCOM is great. L4D is amazing but the 360 has some appauling games as well (Darkest of Days for example). Just stop being queers and get yourself both systems.

The PS3’s Cell Processor is extremely powerful and the approach of splitting the graphical work between multiple SPUs in tandem with the graphics card is far more efficient and powerful. This has been demonstrated and shown in games like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, God of War III, Etc. Also blu-ray is one of the PS3’s greatest assets. Streaming works extremely well when your game is optimized to blu-ray’s strengths. The space available also allows for more detailed graphical assets, environments, animation files, high quality sound etc. etc. Having a HDD as a standard is also very useful for developers to take advantage of.

The 360 has no games that match the quality of Sony’s first party exclusives. And it never will because of all of the above. I’m certain Heavy Rain uses tons of unique assets which is why the game’s scope and vision is best suited for the PS3. Primarily for blu-ray, and also because it simply is far more capable than the Xbox 360. The proof is already out there for all the world to see. Anyone thinking otherwise is simply in denial. Sony has proven it with quality looks games with great animation, good framerates, actual HD rendering of at least 720p.

360 and the Wii are nice and all and have their share of experiences. But the PS3 is in a league of its own. David Cage is not the only developer to openly state it. Nobody is forcing you to get a PS3 and stop playing your 360, but honestly continuing to claim that the 360 is just as good tech wise as the PS3 is simply a lie. It isn’t and was never built to be as forward thinking and ambitious as the PS3 in the first place. It is what it is. I don’t see DS owners denying that the PSP is more powerful and capable, but regardless they still get some good stuff unique to their system. So just accept it, accept that some developers will choose the PS3 exclusively for their vision over the 360 and move on.

so can you explain to me why BRINK has the same graphics (some say even better) than killzone 2 and thats running on 360, PC and PS3.
O and dont forget this is based off what was shown at E3 this year, its not out for at least another 6 months so god knows how much improvement will be made by then.
for all we know it could blow KZ2 out of the water, doubt it but anythings possible.

Woody,, nobody can take you seriously….

after your comment referring to Sony as a Japanese dog, anyone can tell you’re a racist and that you see things by race or nationality. You really don’t care about the quality of your games, you don’t give a fuck about all the problems your Xbox 360 has, scratching your games, dying on you…. as long as it’s from Microsoft which is a US company, then you’re a happy racist.

What you still cant afford a PS3? Im guessing you never played Indigo Prophecy. Might have underwhelmed in sales but damn that game was good. Alan Wake looks great but seriously it looks last gen compared to Heavy Rain. Get new glasses!

Ho hum…the fanboy wars. If you love your PS3 then fantastic…and if you love your Xbox 360 then that’s great too. For all those dissing each other’s systems just be grateful that both Sony and Microsoft are fighting this console war as that means bigger efforts by both to release better exclusives, content and reduce prices. We all win in the end!

I have 1 question for all you 360 fanboys. Why are you even on this page???? I like my PS3 way more than my 360 or Wii, and you don’t see me on a Halo Reach page talking about how the game will “Epic Fail” and all other kinds of BS. If you love 360 so much, why don’t you go read about its exclusives? I hate to break it to you, but people are just laughing at you when you leave stupid comments crying about how some people like playstation more than 360.

Once again, if you love that 360 so much - GO PLAY IT and stop trolling around the internet for PS3 games to complain about. I do not like 360’s business way of doing things (charging for xbox live, charging MORE for downloadable games/DLC/rock band content, and not letting people in your house get achievements on their own profiles for a purchased downloadable game) so I like the PS3 more.

One thing he could be refering to when Cage says this is Blu-ray. I’ve looked at some of the comments above mentioning rage 4 xample, that it will be better on the 360, but in an interwiew with the dev., he said the 360 version will be released on 2 or even 3 discs. The dvd is staring to show cracks IMO

see this is exactly what he was saying no matter his answer he would be scrutinized if he had said “I think it would have been possible on other platforms” then the PS3 users would have been pissed and Sony itself would have really put it to his company so it really didnt matter what he said people were gonna “flame war” over it either way

Heavy rain looks great.. The graphics are superior to most other games.. i mean look at that screenshot… he could be real.. I probz wont get heavy rain due to it looking really hard and kinda short.. but graphics are stunning.. And i agree this game wudnt work on the 360 since the technical side of the 360 is good but not as good as the ps3

Alan Wake is not even exclusive from Xbox 360.

Heavy Rain can’t be run it on Xbox 360, and more exclusives (an example from Uncharted 2, confirmed by Developers) that use more performance on PS3 that Xbox 360 don’t have, so is inferior.

Having a xbox 360 is ponitless when the games are on PC also, and I think we all have a PC here.
Go play MGS4 on PC oh wait you can’t…

PS3 Games do have the best console graphics fact.
      KIllzone 2, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, MGS4, GT5.

I am a declared Sony Fanboy and a Quantic Dream Fanboy. However, the graphics do not impress me. The main problem I have with the graphics: The characters are wooden, very plastic. They don’t have any face expressions most of the time. I mean, just look at Uncharted 2 and I know, that I am comparing cutscenes with actual in-game, but after U2, the emotionless faces in Heavy Rain are not acceptable, for me at least.

But the game is great and I have no doubt, that the Xbox couldn’t handle it. People tend to forget that the 360 couldn’t handle even Mass Effect 1.

MGR,just face it.PS3 has been superior to 360 since it first arrived. And PS3 doesnt have the horrid failure rate that 360 has.Fact is PS3 is supperior to 360 in hardware, software, and disc format. Also,Sony is a superior company compared to microsoft. And if u disagree,it proves ur gay and suck on ur moms dick.

Love it. I say the word “Japanese” and I’m a racist.

I own a PS3 and I love Uncharted 2. I play some multi-format titles on the PS3, and some on the 360. I’m not all that fucked either way since I’m interested in the GAME. If you don’t understand my first comment, then you clearly have no idea about the types of “back-handers” that these developers and studios get.

Everyone has a price and most developers will say anything (”This is only possible on PS3″, for example) for a bit of recognition from a platform-holder. But then again, I don’t expect you to understand when you’re sat there screaming about how much better Killzone 2 is than Gears of War 3 (a game that isn’t out yet) or how Alan Wake kicks Heavy Rain’s ass (despite them being completely different games.)

One thing I will say though, is that my launch debug 360 hasn’t failed yet, and the Elite I picked up hasn’t had a problem. I’ve had two PS3’s die on me though, which is strange.

As for “Go play MGS4 on PC oh wait you can’t…” - I wouldn’t want to, given that Konami’s PC conversions are absolutely fucking terrible when they bother to get round to doing them. And the game may as well have been an on-rails shooter for all the inventiveness it showed.

It is funny how the PS3 “defenders” can’t use punctuation to save their fucking lives, though. Younger crowd, I guess.

One final point - “Heavy Rain can’t be run it on Xbox 360, and more exclusives (an example from Uncharted 2, confirmed by Developers)” - Shame those developers don’t even have 360 debug kits, isn’t it? Would love to know how they can tell that it wouldn’t run when they don’t actually have the ability to code for the hardware itself. Funny, but Heavy Rain’s developers aren’t registered as having them either…how strange.
