360 doubles up PS3 sales of Modern Warfare 2
BY Chad George Nov. 13th, 2009 More on:

Speaking at a digital entertainment conference in New York, Dennis Durkin, Chief Operation Officer of Activision’s Interactive Entertainment Business, said, without going into detail on numbers or geographical break down, that the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 has outsold its PlayStation 3 counterpart 2-to-1. “Initial feedback from retailers is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 [on Xbox 360] has outsold the PS3 2:1,” Durkin said while also noting the news that this past Tuesday, the launch day of Modern Warfare 2, Xbox Live topped record numbers with over two million users online at the same time.

Of course we level headed, fair minded people will wait to see what the exact sales numbers show before reacting in a knee-jerk fashion, right?

I would gather that considering XBOX brings flocks of first person shooter fans to it’s brand just like PS3 is know more for it’s RPGs and Fighting titles. Of course, with the changing demand the gap between the systems is no more then a thin line, but it still can make a difference. XBOX’s premier title Halo began the trend, I know plenty of players who bought the Xbox and later the Xbox 360 simply because Halo was exclusively on that system. Likewise, fans of titles like Final Fantasy (ourselves included) got a PS3, and Nintendo will always capture Zelda fans in the same way. You will see this less and less as more titles branch to multi platform format, but until the day all titles are universal you will see a difference.

not surprising, mw2 is a game for the american audience, and in america the 360 has the market share. yes i realize that mw2 sold great even in europe, but i’d say europe tends to play soccer games, and racers, america likes shooters/action games, foot ball games and rpgs, and asia tends to play racers and rpgs.

thats not totally statistically proven, but its not totally opinion either.

The PS3 recently got its long-awaited exclusive Uncharted 2 which has already sold over 1M in only a few weeks. My guess is the PS3 market is pretty much of saturated when it comes to buying new, expensive games like MW2. Of course some have waited for this title also, which also shows on sales figures, and more are likely to follow as Uncharted 2 games are completed.

It would be interesting to see how many copies of MW2 were actually sold, but that would probably remove some of the “magical 2:1″ which is part of Activision’s spin. But I doubt it’s nearly as high numbers are Uncharted 2. …which made me think: Maybe this is a signal that we prefer exclusives over portables?

Zta, on day one of release alone, MW2 sold 4.7 million copies. If it’s indeed 2:1, then it sold 3.13 million on the 360 and 1.56 million on the PS3. Again, that’s DAY 1 sales only, and not only that but those numbers only cover US and UK (not the rest of Europe). So MW2 has outsold Uncharted 2 BY FAR with just ONE DAY of sales.

That said, it’s a damn shame that Uncharted 2 has sold only a million copies in two weeks. It’s Sony’s biggest game to come out this holiday season, and it really should be selling a lot more. It’s an amazing game.

Wow, those are amazing numbers! I haven’t bought Uncharted 2 yet, but I will so you can add 1 to the sales figures.. Btw, I obviously missed out on all the fuzz about MW2 since I only got to know about this game a day before its release. Did Sony hold promo videos back in an attempt to boost Uncharted 2 sales? Or have I just been sleeping? =)

@Katherine & Matt, Uhm the top PS3 titles are actions games such as Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2. Or think of games like Resistance 1 & 2. And the Xbox has a lot of exclusive (J)RPG’s. That image that the Xbox is a FPS console and the PS a RPG console is out-dated and wrong in my opinion. Both consoles have about the same amount of FPS and both have FPS’s as “console sellers” (Halo, Killzone). But the Xbox has a LOT more RPG’s.

I would have agreed with you if you had compared the PS2 to the Original Xbox. But not now.

If it sold 2:1, it was expected. More ppl may have an 360 than a ps3. Sony’s year delay may have contributed to a lot of there sale problems.

i want to see how these numbers go because people that have only a ps2 or a wii will most likely buy a ps3 specially the people that have just a ps2. so when they buy the ps3 they will most likely choose mw 2 or uncharted 2.

Well that proves only that the marketing campaign directed at the x360 worked. IW and activision are M$’s bitc*** and they favoured this game all way down to the premier. Also it sold the most in US(as it is the dumber and target market) and US is mostly a x360 market. Also when you have a 360 and a ps3 and they say to you 360 gets faster dlc etc. You just take it for the 360. simple as that.

Asgorath, what do you mean? As far as I know, all exclusive JRPGs are being ported to PS3.

bla, bla, bla All i know is that the PS3 will out last the xbox in terms of graphics, and processing speed and thats all that really matters…I used to work for Microsoft but now i know where the real action is! at watch the 360 nosedive next year!! if your smart you will jump ship like I have done…can you tell a disgruntled former game tester when you see one?

Sun, you’re ignoring the PC version. Very likely the weakest selling of the three platforms, but that will diminish your approximations a bit.

Dude it comes out to be about 4.12 $ per month and it is substancially better then playstation network, i would rather pay a small amount for something good then get a crap service for free. i also own both systems so dont play the “fan boy” card on me

I do love all this Xbox PS3 fanboy stuff, if I had to chose a side I’d go with sony. Sony have spent so much money on PS3 it’s insane and they are still losing money hand over-fist on a console that is far better that it’s main rival. Microsoft is already dominate in computing and them winning this war can only be a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with PSN other than the ps3 doesn’t come with a headset, so people are using any old bluetooth headset or none atall. The only reason mw2 had any problems on PS3 is that Activision is pissed off with sony because it has to bare the cost of online game play and not the customer. Activision refers to the PSN as being “run by 3rd parties” but that means them, in other words PSN isn’t free, publishers pay for it and they don’t want to, so they talk up xbox in the hope that sony will change it.

This is why we need competion, MS could easly make online free but it doesn’t want to and doesn’t need to. It has found that going in cheap and charging for all the good stuff later works. People buy stuff and then are comitted so buy the bits that they need to get it to do what they wanted in the first place, and devs are happy cus the cost to them is reduced cus MS sponsors all the adverts and provides the servers. Everyone is happy, till later down the line when Halo 98 is out and you have had enough of Natal switching your Xbox off everytime you say “good night”.

Then you will be wondering what the hell happend to sony and how great it was that they invented blu-ray….. what happend to them? :(
