Update: Gem’s just an early codename, it appears.
Original story: EA CEO John Riccitiello has referred to Sony’s new PlayStation 3 motion controller as “Gem,” sparking speculation that.. y’know, that’s what it’s called.
According to a report over at the now readable IGN, Riccitiello made the remark at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference, saying, “In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace.”
In response, Sony have trotted out the old, “No official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced” line, while EA were “unable to confirm the accuracy of his remarks at this time.”
Gem sounds like a reasonable enough name to us. Better than Natal and Wii, anyway. It should be noted, however, that it wasn’t that long ago that devs were referring to it as “Sphere.” Whatever it’s called, it will be out next spring.
