There’s nothing like a little competition with one’s self

After four weeks of availability, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has become the 8th best-selling Mario game ever in Japan. Selling just over half a million units and jumping from second to first place on the sales chart in its fourth week, the game’s total sales in the country are now at 2.44 million units.

If sales are to continue at a steady pace then by next week it will have surpassed Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Land 2, both currently ahead by just a few hundred thousand units. There’s still a long way to go to surpass Super Mario Bros., which sits at the top quite comfortably with 6.81 million copies sold, though.
