December NPD: Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo

Wii was easily the highest selling home console during the 2009 holiday season, NPD’s newly released sales numbers for the month of December show. The Nintendo system sold through 3.81 million units in the US — over a million more than runners-up PlayStation 3 (1.36 million) and Xbox 360 (1.31 million) put together.

Nintendo also did the best on the software front, with six games in the top ten being for either the Wii or the DS. New Super Mario Bros. Wii took the top spot with 2.82 million copies sold, followed by Wii Fit Plus (2.41 million) and Wii Sports Resort (1.79 million). Activision’s mammoth Modern Warfare 2‘s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions took the fourth and fifth spots with another two Nintendo titles, Wii Play and Mario Kart, the Xbox 360 versions of Assassin’s Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story bringing up the rear.
