New Super Mario Bros. Wii trounces Galaxy in sales

3D may be the way of the future in media, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii is proof that 2D is still the way to the bank. According to the NPD numbers for North American sales through December, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has outsold Super Mario Galaxy in just a month and a half. Since its release in November of 2007, Super Mario Galaxy has sold 4.1 million units in two years. Meanwhile, the 2D multiplayer platformer has sold 4.2 million in 45 days, even beating out Modern Warfare 2 in December sales.

The stocky plumber will be jumping back into the third dimension with Super Mario Galaxy 2 later this year. It remains to be seen whether the 3D sequel will perform as well as its 2D cousin.
