It has been a very long time since Blizzard has officially released the subscriber numbers for its hit MMO World of Warcraft and this may be for good reason. During Activision Blizzard’s earning call yesterday, Blizzard head honcho Mike Morhaime announced that WoW’s current subscription rate was “on par” with their previous announcement back in Sept 2008 at 11.5 million players.
What this could mean is that the game as finally reached a plateau after almost four straight years of incredible growth. There is a chance this might not be entirely accurate as the game’s problems in China, which caused the game to be shut down for several months, might be a significant contributing factor to the recent numbers. We’re going to take a wait and see approach before we start claiming that the decline of the champion of MMOs is upon us. Their next expansion, Cataclysm, will be a good indicator on how well the game is doing and should paint a more accurate picture on whether or not the king of MMOs will finally be dethroned.
