With GDC and the Independent Games Festival only a week away, everyone seems to be getting on board the indie bandwagon to some extent, and software giant Electronic Arts is certainly no exception. They’ve announced that they’ll be bringing two promising titles from notable independent games studios to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.
Shank, a visceral cartoon-style brawler by N+ co-creators Klei Entertainment has been nominated for Excellence In Visual Art at this year’s IGF and features gory sidescrolling combat, a dedicated chainsaw button and a gruff protagonist with more testosterone in his pinky finger than Marcus Fenix has in his whole body. I had a chance to play a brief demo of the game last September at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle (when Klei was still looking for a publisher) and judging from that, I can assure you that this is most excellent news.
DeathSpank is the latest zany cartoon adventure from the mind of Ron Gilbert, creator of Maniac Mansion and the Monkey Island series. Developed by Hothead Games (Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness), DeathSpank promises hours of hack-n’-slash action, things that explode and a delightful cast of off-kilter characters.
Both games will be published as part of EA’s Partners program and should be arriving on console and PC platforms this summer.
