Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey believes the time to announce the next iteration in the Grand Theft Auto series is fast approaching. The analyst doesn’t expect an E3 presence from Rockstar but does feel “there is building suspension for a pre-E3 GTA V announcement.”
“GTA is one of those franchises that’s so huge that Rockstar doesn’t even need to do it at E3,” he says. “Rockstar and Take-Two could hold their own event and announce the title in the days leading right up to E3, when many publishers often do hold separate press events.”
Given the larger install base the consoles have now vs two years ago, Hickey believes Grand Theft Auto V could outsell its predecessor “significantly”.
Take-Two or Rockstar are yet to say anything official on the franchise’s future, however, T2’s Chairman of the Board Strauss Zelnick did offer a comment last September that’s worth revisiting, if only for comedic effect: “… we’re not going to announce it, we’re not going to announce when we are going to announce it, and we are not going to announce a strategy about announcing it or about when we are going to announce it either, or about the announcement strategy surrounding the announcement of the strategy.”
