Following the acquisition of the rights to the browser-based free-to-play The Hunter (pictured), Just Cause 2 developer Avalanche Studios has announced the opening of Expansive Worlds, a new casual and online games focused studio.
According to Christofer Sundberg, Avalanche’s founder and creative director, the new studio “plays a very important part in our long-term strategy in creating and owning innovative intellectual properties.”
“The games industry is still in a state of confusion and uncertainty at the moment,” he added, “and we are very proud being able to show a clear path to move the Avalanche Studios group successfully into the future and beyond.”
As is the case with The Hunter and Just Cause 2, Expansive Worlds will be making use of Avalanche’s own proprietary engine tech.
Says the new studio’s managing director Stefan Pettersson, “I’m excited to join Expansive Worlds and thrilled to leverage the existing technology to provide unprecedented experiences. The industry needs innovative products using innovative business models, and this is where we take the lead.”
