Ubisoft lost Prince of Persia players to God of War, wants them back

Kratos has been tapping into Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia audience, Jan-Erik Sjovall, the animation director for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, says surveys reveal.

“When we make questionnaires and we ask, ‘what did you play in the past?’ The answer’s ‘Prince of Persia‘,” he said in a recent chat. “‘What do you play now?’ ‘God of War‘. ‘Would you play Prince of Persia again?’ ‘No, it’s not hard enough’.”

Players miss the challenge and brutal moves of the Sands of Time trilogy, he says.

“So the idea [with Forgotten Sands],” Sjovall continued, “was clearly that we’d try to bring our old audience back, but also we’re winning a new audience.”

Ubisoft has highlighted the step back from 2008’s more casual approach to the Prince of Persia franchise in the past; late last year, level design director Michael McIntyre said the new game marks a return to the series’ hardcore roots.
