Doubts rise over future of Gears of War movie

Looks like the Gears of War movie has taken a few hits. The director has jumped ship, the budget’s been cut, the script thrown out and doubts linger over some of the proposed stars. Ouch.

Indeed, according to the LA Times, the movie may never see the light of day.

According to their report, director Len Wiseman has abandoned the project in favour of an apocalyptic movie called Nocturne. With him goes a fair amount of financial clout and at least one star.

The man behind the cameras on Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard signed his wife Kate Beckinsale to star, but his departure makes that highly unlikely now.

So instead of a $100 million dollar plus budget, we’re looking at “one that will cost a good chunk less than that.” We’re also looking at a massively scaled-back story. Gears of War, if it does make it to the big screen, will be a “straight-ahead invasion story instead of a sprawling epic.”

Of course, what this means is a back to the drawing board re-write, with “Wanted” writer Chris Morgan’s original script presumably flapping around in an LA landfill as we speak. Oh dear.
