Respawn’s first game is original, undecided

Respawn Entertainment, the studio formed and headed up by sacked Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella, is reportedly getting millions of dollars worth of backing from publishing partner EA. What property that money will seed however is yet unknown even to the founders themselves.

“We don’t know what that’s going to be yet,” Zampella said when speaking about how Respawn owns rights to the properties it creates. “We haven’t decided what the game’s going to be yet, what the IP’s going to be.”

But one thing’s for certain — Respawn will be working on an original property and not an existing EA franchise like Medal of Honor or Battlefield. That much EA Games label president Frank Gibeau made clear, “That’s not an option. These guys are about pursuing their own IP. Internal to EA, we’ve got some incredible development and franchise happening with Medal of Honor and Battlefield. This is an EA Partners deal .., these guys have no roles in those franchises.”

“We’re focused on getting the team,” West added in a separate chat. “We know we want it to be a big summer blockbuster, we want it to be something our fans will really enjoy, but there’s nothing specific yet”.
