Capcom: First Dead Rising was “too Japanese”

2006’s Dead Rising felt “too Japanese,” Capcom producer Shinsaku Ohara reckons. Despite receiving input from overseas, the Capcom-developed, Keiji Inafune-produced zombie slaughterer was still built in “a very Japanese style,” he says — something the Canadian Blue Castle Games-developed sequel shouldn’t reflect.

“We wanted to do it better for a Western audience this time,” Ohara says of Dead Rising 2. “That’s why we’re working with Blue Castle now. They know what they like – and it’s good to have them come up with ideas and it becomes a back and forth thing.”

The collaboration has resulted in ideas that are “crazier” than what was seen in the original game, he says, and the overall product is “much closer to feeling like a Western game”.

Japanese or not, the game should be out later in the year.
