Media magnate Warner Bros. recently acquired Turbine Entertainment, the company behind The Lord of The Rings Online. Warner Bros. currently owns the rights to both The Lord of the Rings movies as well as the games, but not to any online games. With the acquisition of Turbine, that’s not changed, meaning Warner Bros. now owns the rights to everything LOTR related.
Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, said in a statement that “Turbine is a leader in online entertainment and a strong strategic fit for Warner Bros. as we continue to broaden our games portfolio and development capabilities. Turbine’s renowned online game development and publishing expertise will help us develop additional online product offerings, while also providing us with new and innovative ways to market and communicate with our consumers.”
How this will influence future development of any LOTR games is not known at the time, but it would be safe to say that big plans for the franchise should be getting set in stone as we speak, or in the very near future.
