Infinity Ward’s days are numbered. That’s according to Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey who reckons Activision will “essentially” close the development studio after the second Modern Warfare 2 map pack hits later in the year.
Writing for Activision’s investors in the publisher’s first quarter financial report (via Edge), he said that Modern Warfare 3 will probably be developed by two studios completely new to the series.
“We expect Infinity Ward studio will be essentially closed after their next map pack release, with development work on Modern Warfare 3 spread between two studios not historically tied to the franchise,” said Hickey.
The prediction is hardly a revelation. It was revealed yesterday that 38 current and former Infinity Ward staff members are suing Activision for breach of contract, including unpaid bonuses. This, of course, follows the forcible removal of studio heads West and Zampella earlier in the year.
So yeah, even if the name Infinity Ward does live on, it ain’t really Infinity Ward is it?
