Underestimating the competition, aka “those other guys,” is what led to less-than-expected sales of last year’s The Beatles: Rock Band, MTV Games’ general manager Scott Guthrie has admitted. Talking to MCV specifically about European sales, Guthrie said the company was “expecting higher sales.”
“We got caught in a few things that happened last year. It was a tough economy; there was a lot of competitive products out there, and I think Beatles probably had softer sales than it would have if some of those things weren’t in play,” he explained.
“I think that we underestimated the competition and they took mind share away from us.”
Overall and all things considered, however, MTV was “pleased with the sales,” Guthrie also said.
