Nintendo aims for profit with each 3DS sold

Nintendo’s new 3DS isn’t expected to be sold at a loss. That’s according to CEO Satoru Iwata who says the 3D-enabled handled should offer “enough value [to be] worthy of the production cost”.

“We do not think we have to sell the products below cost,” he’s told VentureBeat.

As for any kind of idea on what price point to actually expect? It’ll be above current DS manufacturing costs, he only says.

Around the $200 mark then? Or maybe more?

According to analyst Michael Pachter whose information comes from Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime, the 3DS’ manufacturing costs are “a lot” higher than the DSi’s. And, again, Nintendo doesn’t intend to lose money on the hardware, he cites Fils-Aime as saying.
