EVE Online developer opens console-specific studio

PC MMO EVE Online developer CCP has opened up a presence in Newcastle, England, it announced today.

The new studio, CCP Newcastle, will work with its Shanghai counterpart on DUST 514, an MMO first-person shooter set in the EVE universe, and will be responsible for “delivering advanced solutions for lighting, physics and artificial intelligence” to the company’s console projects.

Thanks to the studio’s efforts in integrating Geomerics’ Enlighten tech, DUST is said to be the first console-bound Unreal Engine 3-powered title to have fully dynamic lighting.

CCP Newcastle will also “spearhead console-specific research and development, looking ahead to the next generation of videogame consoles,” and “[chart] new paths for gameplay and business models that will breathe new life into connected consoles.”
