Metacritic ratings up in 2010

Either games are getting better or critics are getting softer. That’s what one can conclude when looking at Metacritic’s midyear report.

The review-aggregating site explains that seven 2010 games have already received scores above 90. Three of these games – Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Mass Effect 2 – had scores higher than Street Fighter IV, the highest rated game in 2009.

Things are more promising on the low end of the review spectrum as well – by this point last year, 25 games had Metacritic scores of 49 or less. This year’s tally currently stands at 16.

In related news, the DS is the highest rated system in 2010, with an average of 75.5, while the PSP is the lowest rated, having an average of 72 across the more than 90 titles released on the system this year.
