Codemasters has formally announced and dropped the first details on the next Operation Flashpoint game.
Set in Tajikistan, Operation Flashpoint: Red River puts the focus on cooperative play first and foremost. So much so in fact that competitive multiplayer modes have been ditched altogether for this installation; according to creative director Sion Lenton, four-man co-operative is what the game’s being built around, with the new locale offering a suitably “diverse and exciting backdrop.”
The single-player campaign is drop-in-drop-out with “a deeper narrative-led campaign, streamlined inventory and control system, a refined enemy and squad AI system, player class roles including customisable XP upgrades and loadout choice, close-quarters combat, new air support options and comprehensive tutorials” all on the developers’ to-do list.
Additional co-op challenges will be included as well; “escorting a convoy to safety under heavy fire” and “falling back from the enemy against almost insurmountable odds” are two scenarios mentioned. These and other modes promise to “test players’ tactics and teamwork in distinct ways.”
But, “whether playing solo or co-operatively,” executive producer Adam Parsons says, “tense and exhilarating tactical gameplay the series is famed for” is promised.
Red River‘s out sometime next year. No dates yet.
