After suffering a Q1 earnings roundhouse kick to the face, THQ disclosed “considering a longer development cycle” for the next title in their UFC franchise. Brian Farrell, THQ CEO, told investors via conference call that a timeframe of “15 to 21 months between UFC releases” could be in the cards as opposed to annual releases. The consideration comes after lower-than expected sales for UFC Unisputed 2010 contributed to a first quarter net loss of $30.1 million compared with net income of $6.4 million in the prior-year period.
Farrell cited a competitive release window, but fell short of echoing the Red Dead Redemption admission from late July. “Our view is that we captured the hardcore UFC fans, but did not capture as many of the hardcore gaming population as [last year],” explained Farrell. He went on to add that THQ would release its next UFC title before of the end of fiscal year 2012 (ends March 2012).
