August NPDs: Xbox 360, Madden 11 lead the way

Despite a drop from July’s numbers, NPD Group’s figures for the month of August once more put Microsoft’s console on top of the food chain; Xbox 360 sold over 356K units in the US last month, well ahead of competing home consoles Wii (244K) and PS3 (226K). The DS, however, was right on its heels with 342K units sold.

By far the biggest software success of the month was Madden 11 with its of 1.8+ million copies. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Mafia II (released on the 24th) made the top 10 as well, at #4 and #7, respectively.

NPD doesn’t normally include PC data in its reports but does note that StarCraft II sold over 300K copies during the month, contributing to the 35% boost in PC sales.

Overall, sales were down 10% year over year (-5% hardware, -14% software), also making it the worst August the industry’s seen since 2006.

Next month’s launches of Halo: Reach and PlayStation Move will surely spice things up a bit?
