Blizzard has announced that their MMORPG title World of Warcraft reached 12 million subscribers in wake of the launch of the second expansion Wrath of the Lich King in mainland China and in anticipation for the release of the third and upcoming expansion, Cataclysm, due out early December. This makes it, beyond any doubt, the most popular subscription-based game in the world, especially since it’s available in eight languages.
“The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard. “We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights, and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm in December.”
In the shadows of this announcement lurks some rather disappointing news for the fans of the franchise though. The movie tie-in has been put “on ice” due to its director, Sam Raimi, jumping on the three dimensional wagon and working on the “Wizard of Oz” 3D prequel rather than continuing work on a motion picture he’s been officially attached to as its director since last summer.
A never-ending roller coaster, this WoW…
