Sony: GT5 “a true driver of new console purchases”

Last week’s release of PS3-only Gran Turismo 5 will end the year on a high, David Wilson, Sony’s head of UK PR, has said.

Talking to MCV, Wilson said 2010 has been “one of the strongest years in recent memory for quality game releases, and we have culminated the year with the launch of Gran Turismo 5.”

Wilson’s comments come as the title debuted at the top of the UK’s sales chart last week, surpassing its predecessor’s launch success in 2005 by 6 percent. No US data is yet available.

Despite the delays and perhaps lower-than-expected review scores, Wilson believes the Polyphony Digital game will boost year-end PS3 sales and go down as “a true driver of new console purchases.”

“We know it has been a long wait, but we genuinely believe that fans of Gran Turismo will not be disappointed.”

The game was released worldwide last Wednesday.
