EA countered Activision’s long-running Tony Hawk series with its Skate franchise in 2007 and released three games altogether in roughly as many years. Best not expect a fourth though; the skating genre is doomed, CEO John Riccitiello reckons.
While there’s room for the broader genre of action sports — “an ongoing exciting genre” he called it in a recent chat — “skateboarding seems to have run its course.”
The executive sees hope for another declining favorite however, the music genre, and believes it to recover. How? “I don’t know exactly,” he admits. “It could be based on some new innovation. Maybe it all becomes dance-based.” A shame the company likened buying a studio that’s trying just that to ‘catching a falling knife’ then, and ruled out its purchase.
