Square Enix formalizes new Tomb Raider

Updated: More details arrive

Original story: The rumors had it right: the next Tomb Raider game will show the origins of Lara Croft’s sacrilege ways. “Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider,” developer Crystal Dynamics’ studio head Darrell Gallagher suggests in today’s announcement. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

The new game takes a cue from the likes of Medal of Honor and Prince of Persia; it’s simply titled Tomb Raider.

The premise is simple enough: Ms Croft’s boat crashes in a storm, leaving “a frightened young woman washed ashore on an unknown beach.”

“On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive,” the press release teases.

No other official details yet, though the GameInformer cover shot above gives the first look at the new, very beaten down, heroine. A proper reveal is tucked within the mag’s latest issue, available for subscribers today.
