Uncharted 3 named, out next year

Update: More details, images arrive.

Original story: Uncharted 3 is official, with EW managing the scoop. According to the publication, the third game in the globe-trotting series is titled Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and will, as rumored, fill the hero’s shoes with sand.

The story is said to include plenty of deception as the title implies, and focuses on Drake’s relationship with Sully as he searches for a lost city, a search that will lead to the Arabian Peninsula and the Rub’ al Khali Desert.

On the challenge of making gameplay entertaining in that environment, Naughty Dog’s creative director Amy Hennig says: “When we first came up with the idea of sand, you see everyone’s eyes light up here and go, ‘Yeah, that’s going to be really hard — let’s do it!’”

“We’re a bunch of nerds,” co-president Evan Wells adds. “We just look forsomething that will be a technical, artistic challenge, and allowed us to push into an area of the world and history we’ve never tapped into before.”

There will be more than just sandy environments in the game, though Naughty Dog isn’t talking specifics.

It is said that much is being done to expand multiplayer and co-op play. “We want to take on the big boys of the multi-player genre,” Wells says. “It has become something here at Naughty Dog that will become an important part to all our games.” But, again, no details just yet. That’s what the coming month are for.

As speculated, the debut trailer will be showing at the VGAs this Saturday (the impatient ones will find the briefest of teasers at the end of the EW piece).
