Chiptune documentary streaming free on Hulu

Reformat the Planet, a feature-length documentary detailing the beginnings of New York”s chiptune scene from the same film crew that brought us Penny Arcade: The Series, is currently streaming for free on Hulu.

In the filmmaker’s own words,Using New York as a microcosm for a larger global movement,  Reformat the Planet maps out the genesis of the first annual Blip Festival, a four-day celebration of over 30 international artists exploring the untapped potential of low-bit video game consoles. With floor-stomping rhythms and fist-waving melodies, trailblazers of the ChipTune idiom descend upon Manhattan to pen a new chapter in the history of electronic music.”

Though only North American fans of dudes makin’ awesome music on Gameboys are able to enjoy the free Hulu feed, chiptune and micromusic fans of all geographic inclinations can still get the two-disc DVD set at Fangamer, which includes commentary tracks, additional interviews, music videos, deleted scenes, chiptune tutorials, and even a Reformat the Planet 1.5 documentary short detailing the growth of the micromusic movement in the years since the original documentary’s debut.
