LOTR Online revenue “tripled” since going free, says Turbine

How’s this for a little backwards marketing? Since Lord of the Rings Online went free-to-play back in September, its revenue has effectively tripled, says developer Turbine. Executive producer Kate Pais and director of communications Adam Mersky revealed the good news during an interview with TenTonHammer.

That increase in revenue could be due to the over one million new subscribers that signed up after moving to the free model, along with the 20 percent increase in returns of former users, as well as significant increases in active and concurrent players. So how does a free game make money? Why, by buying in-game items and perks, of course!
